Is the current recession on par with a military attack or a even a major disaster?

With the real unemployment rate at an estimated 17%; a number of working people are underemployed; many homeowners "upside-down" in their home’s value versus what they owe, etc., is our situation the same as if we were attacked by a foreign enemy or by a natural disaster in 2007, when the recession began?

in many ways this is much worse as it will actually affect many more families. the other items, while tragic, do not cause us any damage other then to affect our compassion for the victims.
